I just got back from WPPI, which is an awesome event for photographers that takes place each year in Las Vegas. This year I just attended the trade show. It's so exciting to see all the different vendors and hear other photographers speak. I learned some new things, and picked up a few new props for my newborn sessions.

Yummy Summer Treat!

So, the other day I was making BBQ chicken salad for dinner when I decided I needed a nice, light, summer dessert to go with it. I remembered this recipe that I used to make a long time ago and kinda forgot about. I don't even know it's official name, so lets call it.... Cool Pineapple Cake :). I found the recipe for this online a couple years ago when I was looking for low calorie desserts. I remember this on had tons of 5 star reviews, everyone raved of how good it is, so I tried it. It's always a big hit whenever I make it, so I thought I'd share it with all of you. Oh, and the best part is one big slice is only like 160 calories!!

You only need 4 ingredients! Here they are:

1- Betty Crocker Angel Food Cake mix (not the generic brands, not as good)
1- can crushed pineapple in its own juice

2- 8 ounce tubs of light or fat free Cool Whip

1/2 cup (heaping) sweetened coconut

First you gently mix the cake mix (not prepared, just the powdered mix) and entire can of pineapple, on low speed, for about 30 seconds or until completely mixed together. Then pour the batter into a 9x13 baking dish (sprayed with non stick spray).

Bake at 325 degrees until golden on top. THIS HAPPENS FAST, ABOUT 20 MINUTES!!!

See how spongy the cake looks through the glass? Mmmm. Anyway...

Let the cake cool completely. Then top the cake with the Cool Whip.

Now you need to toast your coconut. I do this in my toaster oven, but you can use your oven as well. Line a cookie sheet with foil, spread out the coconut, and place in oven for a few minutes at about 450 degrees, just until toasted. Be careful, it will burn fast. Coconut has to be toasted or it won't taste the same, so don't skip this step!

Let the coconut cool compeletly, the sprinkle evenly on top of the cake.

Refrigerate for at least an hour, then serve.

Oh my gosh, it is so moist and yummy. You can't even imagine how good it is until you are eating it. I made it for company the other night and everyone had 2 pieces! Try it out and come back here to let me know what you think. I want to know who's going to make it. So quick & easy. :)

I've been doing a lot of newborn sessions lately, which is great because I love them, but recently I was editing some pictures of a toddler ( a sibling to one of my newborns) and it reminded me how much I love photographing them too. Toddlers can be a little tricky sometimes, but after a little interaction they usually warm right up to me and give me great stuff! This little cutie melted me! She has gorgeous big brown eyes and the sweetest smile. I just had to share some of her images, so here they are...

Photographing Families

One of the best parts of my jobs is getting to see people interact with their family. They are the people that will love you like no one else! I recently did a shoot for a coworker of mine. Her mom was turning 85 and her children and their families were flying in to celebrate.... like a reunion. I normally don't do large groups but I am so glad I did this one. Judy, you've been blessed with great family. I had a great time and met some really welcoming people! Here is a little preview of what I did...

About Me & Some Changes...

Here I am, sitting in my peaceful, quiet trailer as my kids sleep. This is the last night of our weekend getaway to the beach. We love where we are staying, Pismo Coast Village. It's a large RV park and the sites aren't all that big but there is plenty to do here and there is beach access about 15 feet away! I have been so busy working, working, working, so this is just what I needed.
As many of you know, I am currently the bread winner for my family. We are a family effected by our poor economy. My husband was laid off just over a year ago. At that time I was working part time (I'm a nurse), just a couple days a week and taking care of our kids. When my husband lost his job, my whole world was changed. I couldn't pick up hours where I was working because the patient census was low and I now needed to provide benefits for my family, so I began working at SanJoaquin Hospital in L&D, which is my specialty. My husband became a "house dad" and taking care of everything! We are so blessed that me working full time was even an option and that financially we are just fine. Anyway, I was a little stressed adjusting to all the change, when my house flooded! We then lived in a hotel for 5 weeks... with 2 small children. It wasn't fun, to say the least. Well, anyone who knows me, knows that I am always doing something artsy, and I was itching to learn to use my DSLR camera. So, as a stress reliever, I began taking a few classes and taking a lot of pictures of my kids. It was harder than I thought but I was determined to figure it all out. One photo led to another and after requests from my friends for me to take pictures of their kids, the next thing I knew, I was in business. So, my life has been consumed with photography for the past 9 months. I've been to workshops, conventions, online forums, and blogs... whatever I could do to learn more and more, to make my photography priceless. There is so much more to it than I could have ever imagined! My family has certainly paid a price for it all, in me being gone a lot or consumed with editing. Photography has become a full time job and the nursing part of my life is more part time now. Which is great, but I've been trying to find a balance. Getting a business started has been a lot of work, but I finally feel like balance is coming! I'm telling you all of this because I now know the direction I want to go with my photography as a business. I needed this weekend with my family to remind me why I ever wanted to pick up a camera in the first place! To capture things as they are so I can ALWAYS remember. I love my girls more than anything and I want to always remember their little expressions, their small hands, the way they interact with each other, and even their angry eyes! Kids grow up so fast and before we know it, it's all gone. That is why I love photography. It's the only thing left, the only way to preserve the memories. I want my work to tell a story, to show a personality... not just be a posed picture of a kid in a dress she wouldn't normally wear! I want to help you remember too and thats why I started April Cooper Photography. My sessions will be a little different now. I want to take my time capturing your children and/or family as you are. I want to offer custom photography that you can use as fine art pieces to decorate your home. I don't want to be the photographer that replaces your 8x10's every 3 months, that's what The Picture People are for. I want to be the photographer you invest in to capture and preserve the memories of your life. There is nothing wrong with an 8x10, but what about a fine art canvas? Or a coffee table book? I'm taking a few new approaches in the way I edit pictures, to give a fine art portrait that will make meaningful art in your home. I know that not everyone can afford a custom photography session or a large canvas on their wall but some things are worth saving and investing in, even if it can only be once per year or so. Now that my approach is changing, so are my prices, but I hope you can all understand why. I've had some of the best clients this past year and I thank you all for allowing me to be part of your lives, even if for a small moment. I hope you all will consider, at some point, investing is a custom portrait session with me. On occasion I may offer mini sessions, which are great for replacing your 8x10's at a lower investment, so keep up with me on facebook if you are interested in those.
I guess in all of this, my point is, I love my family and want to see them more. I want to be true to my vision of capturing priceless memories. I've invested a lot in my business and I hope you will consider investing in me. My website will be getting updated with the newest information within the next week or so.

So I recently designed an album, coffee table book, for a newborn session I did. It came out so nice. I took some pictures so you all can see. The cover is a brown croc and the pages inside are hinged so they lay flat. This is an 8x8. Let me know what you think. :)

Redecorating!

When we moved into this house almost 5 years ago I realized I suddenly had a lot of walls to fill. At the time I wasn't doing photography, in fact all I had was a Kodak point and shoot camera, but I loved pictures! So I decided to take some pictures that I had of Emma, convert them to black and white, put them in certificate frames, and put them as a grouping of 4 in this little cut out I have in the hall. Here is what it looks like...

Except my walls aren't so yellow. Anyway, this grouping is kinda small for this space and the pictures were printed on my inkjet printer so they are turning pink... oh and all of them are of Emma, because Sophia wasn't born yet. So, it's time to redo them. I'm keeping it as a grouping of 4 except they will be larger prints so this little cove is filled up more. I decided I still want to keep the theme of them being one year old, So I re-edited (tried to fix) 2 of these pictures and I am adding 2 of Sophia at one year old. This is what I have....

I still wanted to keep with the black & white look... and the candidness (is that a word?) instead of something formal because I want to remember these faces just like this, forever. Since I already have a standout mount up, I need something else. So I was thinking of having these printed on metallic paper as float wraps. Float wraps are really cool thin wraps that have a 3/4 inch block attached to the back so the picture sticks out from the wall and gives the appearance of floating. And metallic photo paper is, well, awesome. Especially for black & white prints. Once I have it up, I'll post pictures of it. Any opinions before I place the order?

Newborn Photo Session

One of the greatest gifts in life is to be a mother. Though it's challenging at times and not always a lot of fun, the rewards are great. There is nothing better than seeing your child smile or hearing them laugh. You get to feel a love that is so powerful and protective... there is nothing like it!

I just had the pleasure of photographing a sweet newborn and it reminded me of how fast time goes by... how quickly they grow. This is their first baby and I know they will be so glad to have these pictures, because even in two weeks from now she will change and be so much bigger. We were fortunate to have newborn pictures for our youngest daughter and I only wish we would have done it for the oldest because they are some of the most treasured pictures I have. There is something so peaceful and innocent about a newborn baby.
Having said all that... I LOVE these pictures. If this were my baby, I'd have enlargements all over my house! She's a beauty...

I love Friday's! It's the end of the week and the beginning of the weekend! I don't know what it is but it feels different to me than any other day of the week. But why is it the weekend flies by? I have been a busy bee this week... between working my "real job" and doing photography, I've had my work cut out for me. I had the pleasure of photographing my beautiful friend and co-worker, Jennifer, with her 3 babies. Look how photogenic they all are...

Animal lovers will appreciate this, so sweet...

Where have I been?

I am terrible about blogging... but I'm making it more of a priority. So my goal is to blog at least 3 times a week. And, it won't just be who I am shooting either. I'll start posting more personal stuff so you all can get to know me better.
I just got back from WPPI which is a huge photography convention that was in LasVegas. I learned so much while I was there and I am so glad I had the opportunity to go. A few weeks ago I announced that I would be partnering up with Michelle Pearson of XpressionsbyMichelle, but after attending WPPI and realizing what I am and am not capable of doing, I've decided to stay on my own. Michelle is a very talented photographer and I wish I had more time to devote to a business partnership but the sad reality is, I just don't.
Since I've been back I've done a few photo shoots to put my new skills to use. I've been thrilled with the way they've been turning out... and I just hope my clients are thrilled as well! Just this morning I photographed the Nielsen's. Such a cute family they are... so check them out.

Tis The Season

I can't believe it's almost Christmas! I feel like it's all happening so fast that I'm missing it! I have been so busy with family photos and Christmas cards, but it's coming to a close in the next few days and I will have a 2 week break to enjoy with my kiddos. There is so much work involved in a photo shoot and the majority of it is at my computer. Don't get me wrong, I totally love it but it does take a lot of time from my family. Next year I will be starting much earlier with Christmas pictures and not overloading myself at the end.... that's what I've learned so far this year!

I have a lot of photo ops planned for the new year. I plan to take a beach trip in February and schedule beach sessions for that time. Then we have the awesome wild flowers that show up in the foothills in March. Followed by Easter photos which I hope to have real bunnies for, then Senior pictures over the summer as well as another beach trip, which will take us into early fall when I will be starting family sessions for Christmas 2010! See how time flies? And of course all the other day to day sittings in between. I will be doing some pregnancy pictures soon.... which leads to newborn pics. Also, coming soon is little girls in tutu's! Lots of color! So fun & exciting. I can't wait to see my own creations. I will be announcing the beach sitting very soon and have only a few spaces, so I'm sure they will go fast. I'm working on a package deal and pricing, as well as exact dates now. So, stay tuned. :)

I want to thank all of you who have allowed me in your life to "capture your moments." Each photo sitting leaves me inspired and gives me great ideas to carry on with me. This has happened so fast, it's unbelievable! But, it's been a great creative outlet for me during this crazy year I've had. I want to wish you all a very Blessed Christmas! I Love Fall!!

I absolutely love this time of year! The warm fall colors, the cold crisp air, and holidays on the way. I'm not much on baking, except this time of year. There is nothing better than baking just to smell the house up like sweet goodies!

I have been so busy with photo shoots that I haven't had time to take it all in... and I can't believe Thanksgiving is in just a few days! Where does the time go? Here is one of my latest sessions out at Hart Park, where the fall colors display so proudly! It is beautiful out there right now!

I did these Senior pictures for Makenzie in our beautiful downtown area... well some parts are really great for my photos anyway. :) This was a fun photo shoot. We were in an alley and I was snapping away when a guy pulls up on his Harley. We all were thinking the same thing, wouldn't it be great to get a pic with that!! Makenzie was already wearing the leather and the boots, it would be perfect. So we started to tell the man on the bike that it would be a great photo op... and he was sooo nice and generous, he just said go ahead and he insisted she sit right on it! How many senior pics are on a Harley? That was way cool. I took so many pictures of her and so many came out really cute. I'll probably add a few more to her facebook album when I finish all the editing.

Catching Up...

Where does the time go? I have been so busy lately! Delivering babies at the hospital, taking pictures for people, and trying to keep up with my own family! I'm really enjoying my photography sessions. I've got to see friends that I haven't seen in a long time, which is so nice. I've been having a hard time falling asleep at night because my mind just races with new ideas I want to try with my pictures... if only there were more time in a day.

I am working on a logo or just a cute way to write my name, to watermark my pictures with and to use for letterheads, business cards, etc. I wasn't planning on starting a business when I started my photography classes... I just wanted to take great pictures of my kids ... but one thing has led to another and it looks like I'm becoming a photographer! I have been flooded with requests to take pictures for people I've never even met! And of course several requests from my friends too. It's very exciting. Thanks to everyone for your support and feedback, it really means a lot to me. Be sure to check out my facebook photography page too, there is a link on the upper right side of this page. I post more pictures over there because the upload is much faster.

Other things I'm working on are Christmas photo cards, photo package deals, and price sheets. Everyone wants to know how much? I'm working on something I can post. I am also planning to start a website if things continue to stay busy for me. So check back often. :)

I absolutely love fall. It is my favorite season. I love the warm smells of baking with cinnamon & spices, the warm fall colors, the bright pumpkins, the cooler weather.... I love it all. Each year I look forward to taking pictures out at Banducci's pumpkin patch. It is so darn cute out there! This year was even more exciting since I know how to use my camera now! Here are a few of the many pictures I snapped the other day. Did I mention that I have the cutest kids ever? I know I am a little biased. ;)

My friend Lisa just had twin grandsons and I had the pleasure of photographing them. Newborns are the perfect subjects... when they are sound asleep! I'm learning that getting & keeping them asleep isn't easy. With twins you have to coordinate their sleep, which wasn't really happening so I only got one good picture of them together. Below there are several individual shots of both boys, though you probably won't be able to tell them apart. Thanks to Lisa and her daughter Leah for letting me "practice" on their precious babies. Also, big sis Zoe was a great model and I got some shots of her too.

Ok, so here it is, I finally decided to create a blog to display some of my photography. I am so excited to have a place to display my work on this journey I've decided to embark upon! I've always had a love for photography and in college I actually had changed my major from nursing to photography but soon changed it back to nursing, figuring more job security! So here I am, more than 10 years later, giving it a whirl! I'm not sure where I will end up on this venture but for now I'm just going to keep practicing and doing what I enjoy. If you or your family are interested in being photographed, I'd love to get the experience. Act now though before I get really good... and expensive! ;) Right now, I am charging a minimal amount and giving complete access to all the photographs but I'm not sure how long that will last.
